Es geht zurück nach Europa

Position Report 224
Date: 6th August 2010
Position: 1200 hours local time was 42.45.15 North, 28.35.80 West.

Our recent progress north was a little slower than the day before but we still made 64.3 miles over the 24 hour period. Winds remain quite light and conditions are calm with the odd light rain cloud and sprinkling here and there. The wind has continued to veer towards the south and south west and we are now steering a course of 040 degrees, and making good 035 degrees.

Over the next couple of days we will continue to turn towards mainland Europe as the wind allows until we are heading just north of due east .

Ich staune wirklich, dass die so weit draussen im Meer fahren...

Die Phoenicia war schon näher an Amerika als Afrika.
Evtl. hat das etwas damit zu tun, dass die Strömung oder die Winde günstiger sind.

Date: 13th August 2010
Position: Our position at 1200 hours local time was 44.33.11 North, 20.33.90 West.

The winds have turned to the north east and east and as a result we made only 43 miles over the 24 hour period. Winds look set to continue in this fashion for the next 2-3 days, so we are taking the "opportunity" to head north. By Monday the prevailing north and north westerly winds are forecast to return and hopefully we will be able to make a big push towards the Portuguese coast and Gibraltar.

The Azores Question

Whilst we are bobbing up and down in the Atlantic and taking the weather in the spirit of true sailors, one or two people have been asking me why are you out in the middle of the Atlantic anyway? Surely the Phoenicians would have rowed around Africa in their small coastal boats and would never have found the Azores even if they had wanted to. zum kompletten Logeintrag des Tages

Nach einem nicht unerheblichen Umweg steht die Ankunft in Gibraltar an:

Date: 27th August 2010
Position: Our position at 1200 hours was 36.48.8 North, 07.41.4 West

Winds continue to be variable ranging from almost nothing at times to a fresh breeze. We made 57.75 miles over the last 24 hours and now have less than 150 miles towards Gibraltar.

The weather conditions have changed dramatically and we are now experiencing typical Mediterranean weather with temperatures above 30 degrees centigrade - a nice change from the cold and wet climate that we experienced north of the Azores.
