NOUAKCHOTT — Heavy rain and widespread flooding in Mauritania have left one child dead and caused damage to bridges and homes, mainly in the southeast, the Mauritanian news agency AMI reported Monday. A girl was swept away by flood waters and drowned in the mountain town of Aioun, 800 kilometres (500 miles) east of Nouakchott, where houses were damaged by rain that reached 130 millimetres (more than five inches) in 24 hours.
