How serious is Al-Qaeda?

Two national security threats were enough for the Egyptian government to beef up security measures in the country over the last five days. The first came from Iraq as a terrorist group linked to Al-Qaeda led a deadly attack on a Catholic church Sunday in Baghdad that killed 58 people and wounded nearly 80.

Algerian civilians 'to be armed'

A number of Saharan countries are worried about militants from al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb

The Algerian government has announced it will arm residents of remote areas to help them fight Islamist militants.

Interior Minister Daho Ould Kablia said the decision was made by the defence minister but would be carried out by his ministry.

He said civilians in some areas had asked for weapons "to fight terrorism".

Mali and Mauritania to cooperate on Sahara patrols
08.11.2010 - Reuters

BAMAKO - Mali and Mauritania have launched joint military patrols in northern Mali to try to overcome difficulties in tackling al Qaeda-linked fighters and other crime on both sides of their desert border. Drug trafficking and other crime, much of it blamed on Islamist groups, have been increasing in remote Saharan zones where the authorities hold little sway. "We are carrying out the mixed patrols so we can intervene on either side of the border," a senior Malian military officer told Reuters on Monday ... mehr

Five Mauritanian terrorists surrender in Mali

Five young members of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) surrendered to Mauritanian soldiers Thursday (November 11th) in northern Mali, AFP reported. The Mauritanian nationals fled a Mali AQIM camp to benefit from new amnesty measures endorsed by the Nouakchott anti-terror policy forum. Earlier in November, Mauritania declined to press charges against another young Mauritanian who fled a terrorist training camp in Mali and surrendered in Timbedra.

Unruhen in Layoune

Danke, Pegatu

Al Qaeda Training in Sahara for New Attacks
17.11.2010 - CBN

From Pakistan to Iraq to Yemen, the U.S. has turned up the heat on al Qaeda. The pressure has led the terror group to seek out new safe havens. They've found one in a remote area of the Sahara Desert known as the Islamic Maghreb. "The Sahara could be the next Afghanistan," terrorism expert Richard Miniter told CBN News. "A wide open desert; a series of failed states with very weak militaries. It's the perfect breeding ground for al Qaeda." ... mehr mit Video
